Comeback: Dread Forum is Online Again

Apr 13, 2023

Since the Dread Forum has been experiencing DDoS attacks for several months, its work was temporarily stopped. But now, it’s back online.

Dread Forum vs. Reddit: what’s the connection between the two?

Early in 2018, the Dread Forum was developed and released by HugBunter. To improve security, it was reopened after a brief period of inactivity. The “Reddit of the Darknet” is how people frequently refer to the Dread Forum. It’s actually because browsing the site will immediately cause you to think of Reddit: the user interface is essentially identical. This implies that you can make your own subreddit in addition to your own threads.

Given that Reddit shut all subreddits devoted to darknet drug markets in 2018, Dread was probably inspired by the platform. Nevertheless, it was only a matter of time before a Reddit clone was made specifically for this purpose, as content can never be completely blocked on the Internet. Another significant distinction is that Reddit and Dread are vastly worse in terms of browser protection because Dread doesn’t use any Javascript at all.

What actually happened?

A persistent DDoS attack in the second half of 2022 caused Dread to be inaccessible. HugBunter has been developing a strategy to restore the site ever since, periodically updating Reddit with his progress.

Dread was finally reintroduced on March 6th, 2023, and HugBunter also released Daunt – a brand-new method to reduce DDOS attacks.

In his explanation, HugBunter said:

“For access to their mirrors, users can submit Tiers that only require a captcha challenge in Daunt. So they are free to choose how they want their settings to be displayed – there are no restrictions.”
