The police chief, Bill Scott, reported: “There was proof that the attacker and Bob Lee were acquainted, but he didn’t provide any information about the motive for the attack.”
On April 4th, Bob Lee, the co-founder of Cash App, was stabbed. The San Francisco Police Department seized a technology executive, Nima Momeni.
Upon the completion of investigation and bail hearing in San Francisco and Emeryville, a town across the bay, Momeni was arrested during a press conference on April 13th. Nevertheless, he didn’t address the reason for the attack.
Here’s what Bill Scott, the police chief, stated:
“The evidence indicated that [Momeni and Lee] knew each other. However, the investigation hadn’t yet been resolved.”
The death of Lee, who was well-known in the technology community for developing the mobile payment platform Cash App, shocked the cryptocurrency community. Although some media outlets described San Francisco as being “crime-ridden,” the revelation that Lee knew Momeni proved the attack wasn’t random.
District Attorney Brooke Jenkins of San Francisco stated the following:
“None of us knew anything about the circumstances of this case right away. I genuinely urged everyone – the media, San Franciscans, and everyone else – not to make judgments about what transpired in this case through Twitter and the news.”
Although San Francisco Mayor London Breed described the incident as a murder, it’s unknown at the time of release what charges, if any, Momeni would be subject to in relation to Lee’s passing. Lee, who also created Cash App, formerly served as MobileCoin’s chief product officer, the head of technology of Square (later renamed Block), and the father of two children.
