A disturbing event related to AI happened in Arizona. The mother of a teenage girl Brie claims the criminals used the AI to copy her daughter’s voice with the goal of getting a ransom worth of $1,000,000 million.
Following the Fake Kidnapping
The mother describes her nightmare: “I pick up the phone, and I hear my daughter’s voice, and it says, ‘Mom!’ and she’s sobbing,” the petrified parent described. “I said, ‘What happened?’ And she said, ‘Mom, I messed up,’ and she’s sobbing and crying.”
Next statements left an already scared parent terrified: “Bitch, put your head back and lie down”, “You call the police, you call anybody, I’m going to pop her so full of drugs,” “I’m going to have my way with her, and I’m going to drop her off in Mexico,” “I’m going to have my way with her, and I’m going to drop her off in Mexico.”
The mother Jeniffer DeStefano said she was shaking during the call and she has no doubts the call was made by her 15 year old girl. The kidnapper asked for a ransom of $1 million but later changed it to $50,000 after parent told him she can`t provide that amount.
It was later announced that the call was made using AI technologies. However, the person who is behind this crime remains unknown until today. DeStefano said she wants to spread awareness about the danger of modern technologies and the public information about the kids, which can be used against the families any second.
AI is Just as Dangerous as Useful
The AI is able to mimic the human`s emotions, and the computer generated speech or text might be absolutely identical to the real person. According to the experts, it’s almost impossible to detect the AI, which makes it very dangerous if the technology is placed in the wrong hands.
The FBI advises internet users to be very cautious about cyber attacks and what people put on the internet. The cases similar to DeStefano`s happen pretty often nowadays.
