The Investigation

In April 2023, the Russian Ministry of Internal Affairs concluded the investigation into the misappropriation of funds from the WEX cryptocurrency exchange, which was formerly known as BTC-e.

The case involves the former system administrator of the exchange, Ivanov A.S, who embezzled over 3 billion rubles from World Exchange Services Pte. Ltd. Ivanov was given exclusive access to manage cryptocurrencies on the exchange in 2018, and he subsequently misappropriated various cryptocurrencies worth over 3.16 billion rubles.

The Official Sentence

The charges against Ivanov include fraud, money laundering, and abuse of power, with a potential 10-year prison sentence if found guilty. This case highlights the importance of robust security measures and employee monitoring in cryptocurrency exchanges to protect users’ assets.

As part of the investigation into the misappropriation of funds from the WEX cryptocurrency exchange, the defendant Ivanov A.S. had his real estate seized and voluntarily contributed over 4.3 billion rubles to compensate for the damage caused and satisfy the claims of affected users.

The prosecutor has approved the indictment, and the case has been sent to court for consideration. Ivanov has been charged under Article 160 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation for embezzlement of another’s property on an especially large scale. If found guilty, he could face up to 10 years in prison, as well as other penalties.
