Has the US and the Five Eyes alliance been charged with coordinating a misinformation campaign by the Chinese Foreign Ministry?
The United States and its partners in the Five Eyes alliance were chastised by Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning for engaging in a concerted misinformation campaign during a press conference on Thursday. A study that was made public on Wednesday by Microsoft and a number of Western nations sparked her reply by alleging that Chinese hackers had attacked Guam and other critical facilities in the United States.
Mao Ning emphasized that the United States is known for its significant presence in the world of hacking. She pointed out that the report is flawed and lacks substantial evidence to support its claims.
The diplomat also highlighted the simultaneous nature of the statements made by the US National Security Agency (NSA) and the cybersecurity agencies of Britain, Australia, Canada, and New Zealand – collectively known as the Five Eyes alliance – aligning with Microsoft‘s findings.
Mao Ning emphasized that this series of events seems to be a deliberate disinformation campaign orchestrated by the United States for geopolitical purposes, leveraging the framework of the Five Eyes alliance.
Additionally, Mao Ning mentioned that the United States not only involved government agencies but also enlisted the participation of private companies in this campaign. According to her, such behavior is not unprecedented and is likely to continue in the future.
