Foreign hackers targeted the seismic tracking facility in Wuhan, China, local authorities reported this on Wednesday, July 26th. The Global Times and a CCTV-run account were 2 state-run media sites in China that said that the assault was “government-level” sponsored and of American origin. Even though the exact moment of the incident is still unknown, the Wuhan Municipal Emergency Management Office confirmed in an announcement that a foreign group had targeted some network hardware at the Earthquake Monitoring Center for a cyber attack.

Cyber Attack on Seismic Records: China’s Security at Risk

China Daily claims that the cyber attack included the installation of backdoor software into the electronic systems in the center, allowing for illegal access to and seizure of seismic records. China’s Foreign Ministry sharply denounced the action, calling it “irresponsible” and a grave danger to the country’s security.

During a press briefing, Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning affirmed that China would take all essential measures to safeguard its cyber security.
