The hacker group Anonymous Sudan attacked a major Israeli media outlet, the Jerusalem Post, and caused a massive disruption of the site. The incident is just one episode in a series of cyber attacks on Israeli government institutions and commercial companies. Anonymous Sudan reported the cyber attack on their Telegram channel.
Details of the cyber attack are unknown at this time, but it is believed that the hackers carried out a denial-of-service (DDoS) attack. Anonymous Sudan has previously used this very method to attack the Israeli government and military resources. It is also possible that the hackers launched malware into the media network infrastructure. The Jerusalem Post site is still inaccessible at the time of writing, displaying “Error 403 – Forbidden.
Large-scale campaign against Israel
This incident is part of a larger series of cyber attacks targeting Israeli government institutions and commercial companies. The group has previously attacked a number of Israeli airlines including Israir and Ayeet Aviation. Moreover, in their Telegram channel, Anonymous Sudan reported attacks on the Red Alert missile warning app, mobile operator Cellcom Israel Ltd, electricity and water providers, and other institutions.
The hackers claim that political and religious motives were the reason for the cyber attacks. According to criminals, the series of cyber attacks was revenge for what “Israel did to Palestine”. However, some believe that the series of cyber attacks are an attempt by the Russian government to spread fear and panic among Western countries and their allies.
Anonymous Sudan is believed to be affiliated with the Russian government and the Killnet group. The hackers’ Telegram channel has repeatedly posted in support of Russia and its war against Ukraine. In addition, Anonymous Sudan conducted cyberattacks against Denmark, France, the United States, and other Western countries.
