The Australian Federal Police (AFP) conducted an international search that resulted in the seizure of 45 kg of methamphetamine that was on its way to Melbourne.

Australian Federal Police agents in Mexico discovered preparations earlier this month for the consignment of the harmful street narcotic to be delivered to a Melbourne address.

The package was halted in Hong Kong by customs officials, who discovered the narcotics concealed within a thermoforming equipment used to shape plastics.

According to AFP Detective Superintendent Patrick Gordon, criminals are using Hong Kong as a conduit to bring narcotics from Central America into Australia.

Gordon also stated the following:

“As we have observed in the past, Hong Kong is a common transit location for shipments originating from Central America, including a record 1.8 tonne liquid meth seizure also bound for Australia.”

The seizure demonstrated the value of the AFP’s international collaborations in ensuring Australians’ domestic safety, he added.

“The Australian community may have suffered grave consequences from this methamphetamine. Unfortunately, these global criminal organizations only care about lining their own pockets and are not concerned with the permanent damage they cause.”
