The VCFOCUS team had been investigating the death of a female on February 10, suspected to be caused by a drug overdose. During their investigation, they traced the suspect, a juvenile male who was found to be running a drug marketplace on the social media app, Telegram.
Telegram is known to be one of the most popular messengers for selling illegal items.
What makes it hard to track is that it`s anonymous and highly encrypted, which is why it’s hard for the authorities to identify those who run dark markets there.
The Investigation
Teenager had sold drugs to an undercover officer whom he had connected with via the platform he operated. The drug marketplace included alprazolam, psilocybin mushrooms, and marijuana items, and had many residents of Ventura County as its customers. The Ventura County Sheriff’s Office confirmed the arrest and the illegal drug selling activities that the boy was involved in.
On March 16, the juvenile suspect involved in the online drug marketplace case agreed to sell alprazolam, which is more commonly known as Xanax, to an undercover agent. Detectives then obtained a search warrant and searched the boy’s residence in Oxnard, where they found an amount of Farmapram.
This medication, which is manufactured in Mexico, contains alprazolam and was intended to be sold to the undercover agent. The Ventura County Sheriff’s Office provided clarification regarding the medication seized during the search.
Although the suspect was arrested due to his involvement in the drug selling activities, he was later released to his guardian as he is a minor. The case has now been forwarded to the District Attorney’s Office for review, which will determine the appropriate legal action that should be taken against the juvenile suspect.
