The Silk Road website was shut down by the FBI in 2013. Ulbricht was detained and accused of money laundering, hacking computers, conspiring to sell drugs, and attempting to have at least five individuals assassinated because they could have revealed the Silk Road’s secret origins. In a letter to the judge before his sentencing, Ulbricht said his acts were motivated by his libertarian views because he thought the Silk Road provided individuals the ability to pursue their own interests. He received five sentences, including two life terms without the possibility of release, and a $183 million fine.
