After a 10-week deployment to the eastern Pacific Ocean, the ocean-going defense ship HMCS Edmonton and its team of about 40 mariners returned to Canadian Forces Base Esquimalt on Friday.

The mission was a part of Operation Caribbe, Canada’s enduring contribution to American-led counterdrug missions in the eastern Pacific and Caribbean Sea.

On April 8, the coastal defense ship, together with two U.S. Coast Guard cutters, a U.S. helicopter, and a potential drug-smuggling ship near the shores of Mexico.

How the Criminals Were Spotted

The vessel came to light while transporting 755 kilos of cocaine, which has a projected market value in Canada of $49.5 million, according to the Department of National Defence. Seven individuals have been apprehended and are currently being held in U.S. custody.

The captured ship was torn down at sea because it constituted a danger to navigation. The U.S. Coast Guard classified it as a “go-fast vessel” that was operating more than 320 kilometers off the coast of Mexico. The officer in charge of HMCS Edmonton declared himself to be “extremely proud” of the cooperation shown by the task force’s American and Canadian soldiers.

According to a message released on Friday by Lt.-Cmdr. Tyler Smith, the team of HMCS Edmonton had been working nonstop since Operation Caribbe started to improve cooperation with our United States and Central American allies, which was essential for accomplishment in this quick-moving and challenging operation.

The Canadian navy claims that, since November 2021, it has assisted in the recovery of 4,591 kg of illicit substances and more than 120 tonnes of cocaine.
