Major Bust: European Law Enforcement Dismantles ‘Ndrangheta-Linked Drug Trafficking Network across Italy, Belgium, and Germany

In an organized raid covering Germany, Belgium, and Italy, police officials in Europe have apprehended 31 individuals who are apparently part of a global drug trafficking network linked to the ‘Ndrangheta crime family.

As a consequence of an organized effort including more than 840 police, 18 persons were apprehended in Italy, 8 in Belgium, and 5 in Germany. Additionally, more than 3.8 million euros ($4.06 million) worth of cash, drugs, expensive automobiles, and residential property were confiscated. This information was transmitted on Monday between Eurojust and Europol.

While it seems to have little effect on the defendants’ illegal activities, this operation builds upon an earlier Italian police operation that lasted from 2013 to 2018. Using their existing network, the men allegedly continued importing cocaine and other narcotics from South America through multiple European ports into Germany and Italy.

In order to make it easier for narcotics to be imported, the organized criminal gang (OCG) formed firms in Germany, claim Europol and Eurojust. In order to hide its drug shipments, the OCG employed foreign businesses involved in the food and car industries.

The operation was carried out, according to the joint statement, inside the boundaries of EMPACT (European Multidisciplinary Platform Against Criminal Threats), the main instrument used by the European Union to combat severe and organized international crime.
