The Gulf Drug Cartel Members & What Happened to Them
Soon after the kidnapping in the border city of Matamoros, the Gulf drug cartel handed up five individuals to the police, and the two recently detained suspects also looked to be part of the same cartel, according to the prosecution.
Aboard Sunday, the two were taken into custody during searches in the northern border state of Tamaulipas, and they were transported to Mexico City aboard a military aircraft. The reason the arrests weren’t made public at the time wasn’t immediately obvious.
Although federal authorities withheld the suspects’ complete identities, the facts and first names match those of two males who were registered in a federal database as being detained in Tamaulipas that day.
Axel Alfredo and Alan Alexis Cárdenas’ names imply that they are connected to Osiel Cárdenas Guillen, the head of the Gulf cartel who was apprehended in 2003.
Attorneys for Osiel Cardenas’ nephew José Alfredo Cárdenas Martnez, who was detained in 2022, acknowledged the two were his sons. Additionally, they said that once their father was arrested, the two took on leadership responsibilities within the cartel.
The two allegedly served as the leaders of the Scorpions and Cyclones, two cartel gunmen groups. They were apprehended after an early-morning search when police discovered six firearms and more than 1,000 doses of “synthetic drugs,” which in Mexico is a word that can refer to either methamphetamines or fentanyl.
The guys were involved in narcotics and immigrant smuggling, kidnappings, and extortion in the Matamoros region, according to the statement, which did not clarify what accusations they would be facing.
