A complex drug smuggling operation was directed by Sundeep Singh Rai and Billy Hayre, both Sandwell Council employees. They gathered 30 kilos of heroin and cocaine, respectively, on June 8, 2022, in West Bromwich. They were taken into custody in a well-thought-out sting operation the next day while collecting another consignment of cocaine smuggling inside banana crates. At the Greets Green Industrial Estate, their arrests took place.

Sophisticated Drug Smuggling: Council Workers Receive 12-Year Sentences

Both people changed their original pleas to guilty at Wolverhampton Crown Court, and they were each given a 12-year jail sentence. Before the trial, after at first denying any involvement in the trafficking of Class A drugs, they finally acknowledged their culpability. On August 25, the judgments were obtained.

In addition to holding roles at Sandwell Council, Sundeep Singh Rai and his accomplice were also members of an organized crime group that was in charge of flying cocaine into the nation on cargo planes. When Border Force agents at Heathrow Airport found the cocaine hidden in a cargo aircraft that had landed on May 26, the scheme came to light. The information that NCA detectives gave led to this revelation.

After the shipment was delivered to the industrial sector, the NCA, along with other agencies, closely watched its progress. Rai and Hayre were subsequently detained as they unloaded more cocaine from a huge delivery vehicle that was also carrying banana boxes. Over 9kg of cocaine was discovered in Rai’s car, and his leased home in Wolverhampton also included 2kg of methylmethcathinone as well as varying amounts of ecstasy, heroin, and cash.

Chris Duplock, the NCA’s operations manager, emphasized the intricate nature of Rai and Hayre’s operation and claimed that the two of them came up with a clever scheme to import Class A drugs into the UK from Mexico. He said that the fact that they were apprehended stopped similar smuggling operations from happening again. The Wolverhampton Crown Court also imposed a Proceeds of Crime Order in connection with the punishment.
